Burchell MacDougall Congratulates Bob Winters on Retirement after 65 Years

Burchell MacDougall LLP is pleased to congratulate Bob Winters, K.C., on his retirement after 65 years in practice and business.

Bob was called to the bar in Nova Scotia in November of 1960. He began his law career with Burchell MacDougall later that month as the firm’s third lawyer, where he practiced from our first office on the corner of Prince and Inglis Streets.

Bob worked with Burchell MacDougall until the mid-1970s, as the firm grew and eventually moved to our current home at 710 Prince Street. His interest in the business world led him to move away from day-to-day practice to pursue other projects, with a focus on the hospitality industry. Over the past five decades, he has had a very successful business career, and has been involved in a number of business ventures locally, provincially, and beyond.

Bob has also been active in matters of healthcare, governance, and education; he served on several boards for both corporations and non-profit organizations, including Mount Allison University and Halifax International Airport Authority. Bob also remained a trusted advisor and mentor to generations of lawyers at Burchell MacDougall.

Looking back on the past 65 years, Bob says the key to a long and satisfying career is staying involved with the things that interest you and being an engaged citizen. He also expresses the need to change with the times, “It’s essential to recognize that change will happen, regardless of what you think of it. Things don’t stay the same, and you can’t retreat from change. You need to be proactive and not be stuck in your old ways.”

Bob’s plans for his retirement include time with his children and grandchildren, continuing his involvement in the community, and staying active.
