Burchell MacDougall LLP congratulates Alexander McKinnon and James Russell on their admission as partners with our firm.
A native of the Truro area, Alexander attended law school at the University of New Brunswick and graduated in 2019. He articled at Burchell MacDougall and following his call to the bar in June 2020, he became an associate with the firm. Alexander practices Property Law and Wills & Estates.
“I am truly humbled to be made partner with Burchell MacDougall and am thankful for all the support the firm has given me along the way,” Alexander says, “Burchell MacDougall has produced a long line of highly respected legal professionals with a strong focus on community, and I am grateful to be in a position to carry on in this tradition.”
Originally from Wallace Bay, James attended the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University, graduating with his Juris Doctor and Business Law Certificate in May 2020. Following graduation, he worked as an articled clerk with Burchell MacDougall, and, upon being called to the bar in June 2021, joined the firm as an associate. James primarily serves clients in the areas of Wills & Estates and Elder & Capacity Law.
“I am incredibly proud to join the partnership at Burchell MacDougall,” James says, “Having started my career with the firm, I have had the privilege of being mentored by some of the most respected legal minds in Nova Scotia. In my view, joining now as a partner is really a testament to how the firm has invested, and continues to invest, in my development. I look forward to honoring that investment in this new capacity.”
Late in 2025, Burchell MacDougall welcomed Anne McFarlane as an associate with the firm, practicing in the areas of Wills & Estates.
“I can already tell Burchell MacDougall is going to be a fantastic fit for my growing estates practice,” she says, “I am excited to be joining a firm that understands the importance and value of this type of work and is committed to providing exceptional legal services to clients throughout Nova Scotia.”
Anne completed both her undergraduate and law degrees at Dalhousie University, and her career has included time in both private practice and working in-house for a national-level financial institution, both in family law and estate matters. Anne is a part-time instructor at Dalhousie’s Schulich School of Law, where she teaches Elder Law.
“Burchell MacDougall has been growing in recent years and that growth is attributable to the excellent service provided to clients of the firm by its lawyers and staff,” says Chief Operating Officer Mike Brooker, K.C., “Alexander and James began their legal careers with us and have developed into excellent lawyers who have earned reputations as providing timely and effective legal services to their clients. The firm is very pleased to welcome them as partners. Anne has a well-earned reputation in the legal community as an exceptional lawyer, and we welcome Anne’s addition to the firm as she brings her wealth of experience to better serve the needs of our clients.”
