After passing the bar in 2015, Tia Silver Surette viewed her opportunity to join Burchell MacDougall LLP’s Wolfville office as a type of homecoming.
Tia grew up just outside of Annapolis Royal in a small community of Round Hill. After graduation, she attended Acadia University in Wolfville for her undergraduate degree in Biology. After completing her honours research, she attended Dalhousie University for a Masters degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and then worked for several years in a biotechnology company in Halifax.
In a career change that surprised few who knew her, Tia decided to return to Dalhousie University for law school. She worked as a summer and articling student with Burchell MacDougall LLP before joining the firm full time. Tia was drawn to the firm because of the unique opportunity it offered to be a large general practice that allowed her exposure to many different legal fields, while at the same time being personal and intimate. Another selling feature for Tia was that it could give her the opportunity to return to the Annapolis Valley.
Throughout her studies and articles, Tia quickly realized that she wanted to pursue a practice in family law. She saw this as an opportunity to try to make a difficult and emotional time for her client more positive, by trying to find mutually beneficial resolutions. Especially where there are young children involved, she believes in encouraging a collaborative approach that allows the parties to maintain an ongoing relationship.
As the mother of an active teenager, Tia dedicates much of her time away from work to her daughter’s sports. Fall and winter will find her and her family around the Maritimes in various curling rinks, and spring and summer is spent at the barn. In her remaining spare time, Tia enjoys knitting and painting.
